1. Canvas by Sketch:
The vibrant tropical motifs on the walls are a showstopper in this cheerful cafe. This all-day dining destination serves up global plates with accents of comfort food. We love the attention to detail with everything from show plates to walls. Regulars swear by the double espresso pork ribs and edamame dim summs. If you’re a ‘dessertarian’, check out their dense and decadent chocolate trick.

2. Sage & Lavender Bistro:
Another global bistro that allows you to visit the quirky, this charming dining space was once an old warehouse. The restaurant offers a slew of small tables as an outdoor dining option, but you still won’t miss the openness to the outside when you’re in the indoor dining section thanks to the high ceilings. Try the Singapore-style chicken curry and their sinful, little Lindt Chocolate Cake.

3. Hokkaido:
It takes its name from Japan’s northernmost island which is one of the country’s most popular culinary hotspots. The constant stream of Japanese visitors is a testament to the authenticity of this restaurant and has compelled them to move from a small spot on TTK Road to a more cheerful, larger restaurant. Their lunch platters are perfect for first-time visitors.

4. Medium Rare:
A traditional dish made with the finest meats, cheeses and imported food products, Mediumare also offers a finely curated menu of Western-style mains. Most frequent eaters come back for their classic roast lamb served with pepper sauce or British-style fish and chips. In addition to their roast – the Jamaican Jerk Chicken Roast being a favorite, their pies (like the lamb and onion pie) are also worth a look.

5. Chemiers Cafe:
A favorite among expatriates and locals for any time of meal or snack. The interiors of the cafe transport you to the Madras of colonial times, decorated with wallpapers and sepia photographs. The menu features artisanal coffee, freshly pressed juices and their signature comfy snack – jalapeno infused Diana Bite. But it is their all-day breakfast that has our vote. 6. Pumpkin Tales:
Founded by three female entrepreneurs, including a restaurant in Vancouver, Pumpkin Stories is run by an all-female service team. The interior is hilarious, with plenty of natural light. In a city where non-South Indian breakfast options are limited, the Pumpkin Tales breakfast menu is a welcome choice. We’re partial to their Eggs Benedict varieties, Power Smoothie, and Morning Glory Bowls that include a kanji and miso soup.

7. Asio:
Chennai is home to the largest Korean expatriate community in India and a long list of authentic Korean eateries. Most of these restaurants were not high on the experience factor. Asio raises the bar for the city’s Korean restaurant landscape – the interiors are more plush and bibimbap is probably the best you can sample in India.

8. Black Orchid:
One of our favorite upscale restobars in Chennai. This is one of those places where you are likely to see sharp Chennaiites on a Saturday night. Most of them don’t come back just for the vibe and the cocktails; This is also food. From exquisite sushi rolls to signature Mediterranean, it’s all in the mix.

9. Max:
Simple Mexican/Tex-Mex restaurant with casual ambiance. Perfect for lunch at the office or for catching up with your school friends on a sudden. The menu is filled with comfort food. The quesadillas are our picks here, the tostada and tres leches cake with grilled pineapple are also popular choices.

10. Les Amis:
If we have to pick one place in Chennai for gelatos it is Les Amis. With a choice of 30 gelatos on any given day, you’re always spoiled for choice. Add a selection of desserts and artisanal coffees and you have the perfect post-meal destination. But Les Amis is more than just a Chinese rush destination, call a day in advance and check out The Hole Shebang, the intimate rooftop dining section that offers a seven-course European-inspired menu
