10 killed, many hospitalized in spurious liquor tragedy in Tamil Nadu

Ten people, including three women, died allegedly after consuming spurious liquor in Tamil Nadu’s Villupuram and Chengalpattu districts, officials said on Sunday.

Officials further said that six people, residents of Ekkiyarkuppam near Marakkanam in Villupuram district, died on Sunday. In Maduranthagam of Chengalpattu district, two people died on Friday and a couple died on Sunday, all due to consumption of illicit liquor.

“Currently, more than two dozen people are undergoing treatment and are said to be doing well,” he added.

Inspector General of Police (North) N Kannan has assured that appropriate measures will be taken in response to the incident. He told that 10 dead must have consumed poisonous liquor containing ethanol-methanol.

He said that two separate incidents of death due to spurious liquor have been reported in the northern region of Tamil Nadu and so far the police have not found any evidence of connection between the two incidents, but the police are conducting a probe to find out any possible link. “Two incidents of spurious liquor have been reported, one in Chengalpattu district and the other in Villupuram district. 6 people were hospitalized yesterday with complaints of nausea, burning sensation in eyes, vomiting and dizziness at Ekkiyarkuppam village in Villupuram district near Marakkanam. was admitted. Four died as they did not respond to treatment, while two are in the intensive care unit. 33 are doing well with treatment ,” the IG said while addressing a press conference here in Villupuram on Sunday.

Meanwhile, two more people died while undergoing treatment in the ICU, taking the death toll in Villupuram district to six and the total death toll to 10.

“In connection with the incident, a person identified as Amaran has been arrested and spurious liquor has also been seized from his possession. It has been sent for laboratory to detect the presence of methanol in it,” the IG said. said further.

IG N Kannan elaborated on the second incident in Chengalpattu district where 4 people died, “In the morning a case was reported from Chithamoor in Chengalpattu district where two people of a family died. While another The person was undergoing treatment at the hospital.” Initially, we thought it could be a suicide attempt due to a family dispute, but after seeing his symptoms, we suspected it to be a spurious liquor incident.”

“After this, an alert was sounded in the area. Later, two more people with similar symptoms were admitted to the hospital. A total of four people died, while the fifth is undergoing treatment. The post-mortem of the body has been done And an accused has been named in connection with the incident.” Ammavasai has been arrested,” said N Kannan.

He also referred to the preliminary investigation and found that all the deceased might have consumed denatured alcohol mixed with ethanol and methanol which may have been the cause of death.

“In both the incidents, some of the accused are absconding and special teams have been formed to trace and nab the accused,” he added.

Disciplinary action has also been taken against the officials concerned, he said.

The IG said, “In Villupuram Marakkanam, 2 inspectors and 2 sub-inspectors have been suspended. Similarly, an inspector and 2 sub-inspectors have been suspended in connection with the Chengalpattu incident.”
