Ten Pakistani soldiers were killed in an attack by militants on a security forces post in Kech district of restive south-western Balochistan province. The army gave this information on Thursday.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of the army, said in a statement that “fire raids” were carried out by terrorists on the intervening night of January 25-26.

It said that 10 soldiers were killed in the heavy exchange of fire, one terrorist was killed and several others were injured in the incident.

It said three terrorists were apprehended in the follow-up evacuation operation.

“The Armed Forces are committed to eliminating terrorists from our soil, no matter what the cost,” the statement said.

So far no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Balochistan, bordering Iran and Afghanistan, is home to a long-running violent insurgency. Baloch insurgent groups have carried out several attacks in the past targeting China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects in the region.

On January 5, two soldiers and the same number of terrorists were killed in two separate intelligence-based operations (IBOs) conducted by security forces in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

On January 21, Pakistan Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa reiterated the army’s resolve to fight against terrorism, Dawn newspaper reported.

General Bajwa vowed that the sacrifice of those killed would not go in vain and that “complete peace would return to Pakistan”.
