Kolkata: The city’s traffic police is preparing a list of 100 places on some of the busiest roads like EM Bypass, CR Avenue, Diamond Harbor Road and Narkeldanga Road ahead of Durga Puja.
The list will be submitted to KMC and other agencies like KMDA and Kolkata Port Trust so that they can complete the work at the earliest. The police have also provided pictures of the spot to take their point home. The spots fixed by 25 traffic guards on the basis of daily patrolling of roads – have been compiled in Lalbazar. The final list is likely to be released by Friday.
Sources in Lalbazar said the spots are almost equally divided between the additional areas of North, East and South Kolkata. Apart from the big three (Bypass, CR Avenue and DH Road) some of the roads mentioned are JM Avenue, KK Tagore Street, Narkeldanga Road, CGR Road, NSC Bose Road, Biren Roy Road and Haridevpur MG Road. Smaller stretches on SP Mukherjee Road, Deshapran Sasmal Road, Central Avenue and Strand Bank Road are also mentioned in the list. “Patchwork has started on EM Bypass, CR Avenue and JM Avenue, but the rain is washing away the bitumen layer,” claimed a Lalbazar official.
Repairing roads ahead of Durga Puja is an annual affair, but this year, the process has been expedited as the police want to be ready with the data ahead of the Durga Puja coordination meeting set up by the chief minister on August 22.
Senior officials said the complete list includes parts that need major repairs and those that need minor patchwork. The police are particularly concerned about the roads in the port and additional areas which are in poor condition leading to traffic disturbances. “The 8- to 10-inch-deep potholes, mostly caused by the accumulation of rain water, are especially dangerous for two-wheeler riders,” said an official of the traffic guard in north Kolkata.
