11 more cases of Omicron confirmed in Tamil Nadu

Samples of 11 more persons have tested positive for the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 in Tamil Nadu, taking the total to 45. The 11 persons included international travelers and their contacts.

According to a bulletin issued by the health department on Tuesday, there were 45 confirmed cases of the Omicron variant in the state – 13 international travelers on arrival, 10 international travelers on the eighth day of testing and 19 contacts of international travelers, while three were not linked. So far, 24 patients have been discharged and 21 have been hospitalised. While two cases were cross-notified in Kerala and Puducherry, there were nine active cases in Chennai, four in Madurai, two in Tiruvannamalai and one each in Chengalpattu, Kanyakumari, Salem and Tiruvarur.

Steady growth in Chennai

The state’s daily tally of COVID-19 cases rose marginally to 619 on Tuesday from 605 on Monday. Chennai continued to register a steady rise as 194 persons tested positive against 172 cases on the previous day.

Coimbatore had 84 cases, while 59 in Chengalpattu and 40 in Erode tested positive. 33 cases were reported in Tiruppur, 29 in Salem and 22 in Tiruvallur. There were no fresh cases in five districts – Kallakurichi, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukottai, Theni and Villupuram. In fact, 22 districts reported less than 10 new cases each.

Among those who tested positive were four international travelers – two from Qatar and one each from UAE and Ukraine – and three persons from other states – two from West Bengal and one from Delhi.

The state’s total cases rose to 27,45,261. Another six people succumbed to the infection, taking the death toll to 36,750. One death each was reported in Chengalpattu, Chennai, Coimbatore, Dharmapuri, Erode and Sivaganga. While 638 people were discharged after treatment, 6,537 people are undergoing treatment. Chennai had the highest number of active cases at 1,519.

A total of 1,02,826 samples were tested. With this the total number of samples tested so far has gone up to 5,71,30,470.

With 1,80,806 persons vaccinated on Tuesday, the total coverage at government centers increased to 8,06,74,976. These included 1,05,394 persons in the age group of 18-44; 49,112 persons aged 45-59; and 26,105 senior citizens.
