11 omicron sub-variants detected from 124 international travelers

new Delhi New Delhi: Eleven omicron sub-variants of the Covid-19 virus have been sequenced in India from 124 international passengers who tested positive during screening at international ports, including sea and airports, a top health ministry official said on Thursday. did.

These passengers had returned to India from Kovid affected countries between 24 December and 3 January.

In view of the sudden surge of Covid in China and other countries, the Central Government had mandated 2% random testing of foreign travelers on arrival in India from December 24 last year.

“19,227 international passengers from more than 5228 flights have been screened, of which 124 persons have tested positive and all patients have been kept in isolation. Their samples have been sent for whole genome sequencing,” the official said.

According to medical scientists, since Omicron has been found to be milder to a large extent among the Indian population, its sub-variants may also be similar. But they advise to be careful and follow preventive measures.

The only thing India needs to be careful about is tracking any new variant other than Omicron.

Genome sequencing of positive samples revealed XBB as the most predominant omicron sub-variant with 14 cases.

This is followed by the BQ.1.1 series with 9 cases. One sample confirmed the presence of the BF.7, CH.1.1 and CH.1.1.1 sub-variants.

“Genome sequencing showed the omsiron sub-variant in the samples,” said a top INSACOG scientist.

“These variants are already airing in India and specifically on CH.1.1 and CH.1.1.1 since December,” he added.

Scientists said that there are more than 600 sub-clans of Omicron currently roaming in India.

Recently, the central government amended the guidelines for international travelers coming to India from high-risk countries to reduce the risk of importation of the variant of COVID-19.

As per the revised guidelines, a pre-departure RT-PCR test is required 72 hours prior to commencing the journey.

This is applicable for all passengers on all international flights from a group of nominated countries.

“People should follow utmost Covid preventive measures and people should not fall into the trap of misinformation related to Covid; Rather they should follow the instructions and advisories given by government agencies on Covid issues,” said Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya.

Further, in view of the rising trajectory of COVID-19 cases in some countries, particularly China, Singapore, Hong Kong, Korea, Thailand and Japan, the Central Government has allowed COVID-19 negative passengers to transit through these countries. Reports have been made mandatory. Their country of origin will have to present a COVID-19 report before arrival at any Indian airport.
