11 year old British girl made blankets for homeless people using packets of chips

An 11-year-old girl is making blankets out of packets of chips to help the locals fight this severe cold. Alyssa Dean, a resident of Prestatyn in Wales, UK, collects chip bags to turn them into warm survival blankets for the homeless. The little girl takes about 44 packets to make one blanket and till now she has made around 80 such parcels. Each parcel includes a blanket, hat, gloves, socks and a chocolate treat. Alyssa got full support and help from her family and friends. Through her initiative, the 11-year-old wants to help homeless people stay safe during the winter.

You must be wondering how crunchy packets can be used to prepare warm blankets. Well, in an interview with North Wales Live, Darlene, Alyssa’s mother revealed that the packets are ironed together first, and the next step is to weatherproof them. Alyssa, 51, had helped her collect the empty chips bags at work. Talking about her daughter, she said that Alyssa is “very environmentally conscious” and a project like this is a perfect fit for her. Darlene said that while at work she kept a collection box in which people put their crunchy packets.

According to Alyssa’s mother, it takes about 45 minutes to prepare a blanket, which includes both ironing, weatherproofing, and sewing. “We wanted to give a little more than just a blanket to the homeless, so we included other bits and pieces to help keep them warm,” she said. Darlene explained that earlier Alyssa was using her pocket money for this initiative, however, she now has a fundraiser to stock the parcel.

Care packets will be distributed in Denbighshire, Conwy and Flintshire.

If anyone wants to come in, they can save the crisp packets and hand them to Alyssa and her mom, so they can make more blankets.
