NEW DELHI: 12 Rajya Sabha MPs from different parties were on Monday suspended for ‘disturbed and violent behavior’ during the monsoon session of Parliament for the rest of the winter session.
This includes six from Congress, two each from TMC and Shiv Sena and one each from CPM and CPI.
The suspension notice said, “This House takes cognizance of and strongly condemns the utter disregard of the authority of the Speaker, the utter and persistent abuse of the rules of the House leading to his unprecedented misconduct, contempt, unchecked and unchecked interference in the working of the House.” Violent behavior and deliberate attacks on security personnel, on the last day of the 254th session (Monsoon session) of Rajya Sabha (Monsoon Session) i.e. 11th August, so as to bring down the dignity of the House respected and insulted by the following members and for the above compelling reasons to be resolved. To suspend these members from the service of the House for the remainder of the 255th session under Rule 256 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Rajya Sabha.”
The suspended MPs are Elaram Karim (CPM), Phoolo Devi Netam, Chhaya Verma, R Bora, Rajamani Patel, Congress’s Syed Nasir Hussain and Akhilesh Prasad Singh, CPI’s Binoy Viswam, Trinamool Congress’s Dola Sen and Shanta Chhetri, Priyanka. Chaturvedi and Shiv Sena’s Anil Desai.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi moved a motion for the suspension of 12 MPs, which was accepted by voice vote.
Soon after, the proceedings of the House were adjourned for the whole day.
Both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha witnessed a ruckus with slogans raised by opposition MPs on Monday. They were demanding discussion on a bill to repeal three agricultural laws.
