12th IBA World Boxing Championship: Nikhat Zareen creates history by defeating Thailand’s Jutamas Jitpong to win gold

Nikhat Zareen achieved another feat by defeating Jutamas Jitpong of Thailand in the 12th IBA World Boxing Championships in Istanbul.

Indian boxing sensation Zareen was born in Nizamabad, Telangana to an Islamic household. She revealed that she had to endure and overcome the age-old patriarchal notion of boxing that was not suitable for women.

It has not always been easy for her after achieving as much as she has in her nascent boxing career as she was embroiled in a heated debate as she expressed her dismay about the direct selection of Indian boxing icon MC Mary Kom .

And it would not be wrong to say that she has lived up to her immense potential and made the country proud on the international stage.

In the 12th edition of the WBC, Zareen was on fire as she defeated opponents Mexico, England and Brazil 5-0 in each of her matches on her way to the final of the tournament.

With the win, she joined Mary Kom, Sarita Devi, Jenny RL and Lekh Casey as the fifth Indian to win gold at the World Boxing Championships.

His inspiring performance on the grand stage will surely inspire the youth to take up the sport and take the standards and conditions of Indian boxing up a notch.
