14th round of border talks between India, China today

The pending border issues will be discussed between India and China today. The talks will be held under the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC).

Three major friction points had emerged between the two countries, including both sides of the Pangong Lake, Gogra Heights and Hot Springs area, following the Chinese build-up along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh.

Through several rounds of talks, the two sides have resolved issues related to the Pangong Tso and Gogra Heights friction points as troops withdrew.

During the 13th round of meeting, the focus was on resolving the remaining issues along the LAC in Eastern Ladakh between the two sides.

The Indian side pointed out that the situation along the LAC was caused by unilateral attempts by the Chinese side to change the status quo and violate bilateral agreements.

“It was therefore necessary that the Chinese side take appropriate steps in the remaining areas to restore peace and tranquility along the LAC in the western region,” according to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs.

This would also be in line with the guidance provided by the two foreign ministers at their recent meeting in Dushanbe, where they agreed that both sides should resolve the remaining issues at the earliest. The Indian side emphasized that such resolution of the remaining areas would facilitate progress in bilateral relations.

“During the meeting, the Indian side made constructive suggestions to resolve the remaining areas but the Chinese side did not agree and could not make any forward-looking proposal. Thus the remaining areas were not resolved in the meeting,” the statement from the Ministry of External Affairs said.
