16 Sabarimala pilgrims injured in accident in Ernakulam

While two persons were from Telangana, the rest were residents of Tamil Nadu’s Kallakurichi district.

Sixteen Sabarimala pilgrims traveling from Telangana were injured when a mini bus collided with a lorry near Chakkarparambu along Edappally-Vetilla section of Ernakulam bypass during the early hours of Wednesday, December 22.

The injured included two children aged 11 and 13. Two persons, including the driver of the minibus, were from Telangana, while the rest were from Tamil Nadu’s Kallakurichi district.

Several injured were admitted to Aster Medicity Hospital here. According to hospital officials, the condition of the persons admitted to the Ernakulam Medical Center near the accident site is not critical, even though they sustained fractures and multiple injuries. The people of Salem were working in a granite factory in Telangana.

Police said the accident happened around midnight on Tuesday when the minibus rammed into a lorry. He said that the driver of the lorry was taking the reverse when the minibus hit him.

Venkatesan, who was sitting in the last row of the minibus, said that he did not remember anything as it all happened in a jiffy. “Most of us were asleep,” he said.

The injured from Kallakurichi district will be shifted to a hospital in Salem on his request. Hospital officials at Aster Hospital said investigations were on to find out whether the injured required any surgery or other procedures as they had sustained multiple injuries.
