18 killed in road accident in West Bengal’s Nadia district; Modi, Shah, Mamta condole loss of lives

The deceased were identified as residents of Baghda in North 24 Parganas and were on their way to a cremation ground in Navadweep. Five injured were taken to the government hospital. Local people say that this accident happened due to dense fog.

Local people and the police admitted the injured to Shaktinagar General Hospital, where doctors after examining their condition referred the serious ones to another medical institution in Krishnanagar.

Shri Modi announced a one-time grant of ₹ 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) to the next of kin of those killed and ₹ 50,000 for the injured.

Mr Shah also prayed for the strength and welfare of the bereaved families.

He tweeted, “I express my condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in this. May God give them the strength to bear this loss. I wish the injured a speedy recovery.”

The CM, on his part, promised to “provide necessary assistance to the families” of the victims.

Ms Banerjee said that the West Bengal government would provide all necessary help and assistance to the families of the victims. Trinamool Congress minister Jyotipriya Malik, who visited the accident site, said the driver of the vehicle was under the influence of alcohol.

Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar emphasized on promoting road safety measures.

“Deeply saddened to learn of 18 killed and 5 injured in Nadia district after a truck collided with a truck parked on the side of the road. Expect all efforts @MamataOfficial to the families of the deceased and injured. There is a need for road safety,” he said.

The Government of West Bengal had launched the “Save Drive, Safe Drive” campaign in 2016 to promote road safety in the state. The accident has raised questions about the campaign.
