1,849 new COVID cases reported in Maharashtra today, 52 infections of highly transmissible BA variant

Maharashtra on Sunday reported 1,849 fresh COVID-19 cases and three deaths, informed the state health department in a bulletin. With the new infections, the total number of coronavirus cases rose to 80,47,455 and the death toll to 1,48,104.

The fresh deaths were reported from Mumbai (2) and Ratnagiri district (1).

The official said 1,853 people were discharged in the last 24 hours, taking the state’s recovery rate of 98 per cent to 78,86,348, taking Maharashtra to 13,003 active cases.

State laboratories have detected 52 cases of BA.5 and 10 cases of BA. The official said that there are 4 sub-variants of BA.2.75 with 79 patients.

While eight cases of the BA.2.75 sub-variant of the novel coronavirus are from Solapur, the rest of the cases are from Pune.

He said that with the new addition, the number of BA.4 and BA.5 patients has increased to 258 and 199 respectively.

He said that Maharashtra’s mortality rate is 1.84 percent.

With 41,354 tests conducted in the last 24 hours, the number of samples tested so far in Maharashtra has gone up to 8,31,88,369.
