2.5 lakh more applications received on NEET 2022, there will be tough competition for medical colleges

More than 18.72 lakh candidates have registered for this National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) 2022. Out of which more than 10.64 lakh candidates are female and 8.07 lakh are male. This is the first time in recent years that the number of women in the medical entrance examination has crossed 10 lakhs. Moreover, the number of registrations is at a record high. There is a significant jump of over 2.5 lakh as compared to last year when around 15.44 lakh candidates appeared for the exam.

The increase in the number of applications for NEET could be due to several reasons, including the removal of the upper age limit and people above the age of 25 to be eligible for medical admission. In addition, the number of repeaters has also increased. Many educational experts are of the view that last year due to the pandemic-caused interruptions in the education cycle, many students were barred from taking the exams.

While more students taking the exam for a limited number of seats obviously means more competition with the backlog of students preparing from 2021 onwards and removal of the upper age limit, it is being said that it is one of the toughest medical entrance exams. It is possible

“The entire process of preparing and cracking NEET has become more time-consuming with time making the competition tougher. With the number of applications for NEET crossing the 18 lakh mark for the first time, the competition is sure to increase. Last year also we saw that three students scored full marks in NEET,” said Saurabh Kumar, chief educational officer, Vidyamandir Classes.

He believes that competition is likely to remain tight in the years to come as the pandemic has overtaken engineering to make medicine one of the most demanding careers. Kumar said, “With the health sector booming due to COVID-19, more number of students are focusing on the medical stream as they feel it brings more security to their financial condition even in the worst of circumstances.”

However, not everyone among the 18 lakh students is a competition, Kumar claimed as he explained, “Ultimately applicants over the age of 25 will not be a major game changer as past trends show that students who are in the upper age limit We had to make a habit of not cracking NEET. So everyone is not a competition.”

To ease the hassles of the candidates, NTA – the exam conducting body – has not only continued with the internal choice introduced last year in the medical entrance exam, but has also increased the time duration of the exam to 20 minutes, which May be of help As the preliminary candidates used to get 1 minute for each question in the medical entrance exam.

Giving advice to the students on how to be better than this ever-increasing competition, Kumar said, “revise the syllabus at least 3 to 4 times”. He also asked parents to ensure that their child does not feel pressured.

According to MoHFW data, there were 54,348 medical seats in 404 government and private colleges in 2014-15. In the session 2021-22, these numbers increased to 83,075 and 554 respectively.
