2 flats donated to IIT Bombay by family of late founding faculty member

Wife and daughters of late Professor RS Iyer, one of them IIT BombayThe founding faculty members of the company have donated two flats at Powai and Ghatkopar. According to a leading daily news, this step has been taken by the family of RS Iyer only for the benefit of the development of the institute. His daughters, who are alumni of the institute, live with their mother in the United States.

The institute has already received the documents of both the flats. The proceeds from the sale of these apartments will be used to set up a chair in the civil engineering department and improve the conference rooms. Interestingly, both of them will be named after Iyer.

According to the report, the institute and the family signed a memorandum of understanding on Thursday evening. The MoU was signed during an online meeting in which IIT Bombay Director Subhasis Choudhary was also present.

Jayshree Subrahmiya, younger daughter of late Professor RS Iyer, said that IIT-Bombay was her father’s life and also provided him with a family environment when he was growing up. He said that after his demise in 2019, they wanted to create a legacy in his name.

Jayashree, who is currently a senior executive in a leading IT firm, told the news agency, “When we came to know about Professor Subir Kar’s wish, we thought it was a way to continue our father’s legacy as well. Unique way.” Subir Kar was another faculty member, whose wife had left a flat in Powai for the institute last year to set up a chair professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Prof Iyer was known for his outstanding contribution to structural engineering. He retired in 1993 as Dean (Academic) and Head of the Department of Civil Engineering. Iyer’s elder daughter, Ranjani Sehgal, noted that her significant contribution was in shale structure, polymer concrete and low-cost housing. Ranjani currently oversees the US branch of an NGO that runs the largest number of schools in rural India.
