2 horrific killings, nationwide protests: India grapples with violence over Prophet’s remarks

The remarks made by former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma on May 26 about Prophet Muhammad sparked outrage across the country. Two people were recently brutally murdered for allegedly supporting Nupur Sharma on social media. In addition, there were widespread protests across the country over the remarks against the Prophet, in which many people were killed and many were injured.

A tailor was murdered in broad daylight on June 28 in Udaipur over a social media post in support of Nupur Sharma. Two men beheaded him and later recorded a video admitting to the murder. Four accused in Udaipur murder case The main accused, including Mohammad Riaz and Ghaus Mohammad, have been sent to the custody of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) till July 12.

After this incident, another gruesome murder of a chemist was done in Amravati, Maharashtra on Saturday. Local BJP leaders submitted a letter to the police alleging that Kolhe was killed to “avenge and set an example”. So far, six people including the main accused have been arrested in the case.

Meanwhile, after Tailor murdered in broad daylight in Udaipur, Rajasthan, the wife of slain Hindu Samaj Party chief Kamlesh Tiwari alleged that she received an anonymous letter threatening to kill her. Kamlesh Tiwari was assassinated in 2015 after he came into controversy with his objectionable remarks on Prophet Mohammad.

Two people, including a 16-year-old boy, were killed in protests in Jharkhand over provocative remarks against the Prophet. Police arrested 421 people and registered 20 FIRs in connection with violent protests in Uttar Pradesh.

The protesters held placards demanding the arrest of Nupur Sharma and also burnt an effigy of the BJP leader. Incidents of stone pelting were reported in several states as protesters clashed with the police.

In Delhi, a Demonstration outside Jama Masjid At least 1500 people gathered on the spot demanding the arrest of Nupur Sharma. However, the Shahi Imam of Delhi’s Jama Masjid distanced himself from the protest saying that no such call of protest was given by the mosque authorities.

Hundreds of people arrived in Kolkata with posters demanding the arrest of Nupur Sharma. Protesters blocked the road at several places in Howrah district of West Bengal in the state. The West Bengal Assembly also passed a resolution condemning Nupur Sharma.

Violence broke out in several other states including Bihar, Gujarat and Telangana.

Nupur Sharma’s remarks sparked global outrage as India faced heavy backlash from Muslim-majority countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Indonesia, Iraq, Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bahrain. Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry said in a tweet, “The Ministry of External Affairs condemns and condemns the statements made by the Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson. [#BJP]Insult of Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him.”

Welcoming the government’s decision to suspend Nupur Sharma, Bahrain’s Foreign Ministry stressed the need to condemn attempts to incite religious sentiments and incite religious hatred. The Taliban regime in Afghanistan also condemned the remarks.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also reacted to the incident, saying, “We strongly encourage respect and tolerance for all religions.” The spokesperson was responding to a question on Nupur Sharma’s remarks about a prophet by a Pakistani journalist.

The Supreme Court has courted a huge controversy on Suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma over her remarks on Prophet. The SC said his remarks against the Prophet were made either for “cheap propaganda, a political agenda or for some nefarious activities”.

Malaysia-based hacktivist group Dragonforce has launched a series of cyber attacks against the Indian government, following the recent remarks by suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma about Prophet Muhammad.

The hacking group has launched a campaign, OpsPatuk, which translates to “Strike Back” against the Indian government. It is also seeking help from “Muslim hackers, human rights organizations and activists (sic) around the world”.

Nupur Sharma made some remarks about Prophet Muhammad during a panel discussion about the Gyanvapi Masjid survey conducted by a television news channel, which angered many people across the world. Soon after, she apologized on Twitter. Soon after the controversy broke out, the BJP spokesperson was suspended from the party.
