2 killed, 4 injured in temple chariot overturning in Tamil Nadu: Police

Tamil Nadu CM announced a cash relief of Rs 5 lakh each to the family of the deceased.

Dharmapuri, West Bengal:

Two persons were killed and four others were injured when a huge chariot of a popular temple overturned on Monday at Papparapatti here. Police gave this information.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed grief over the incident and announced a cash relief of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the deceased.

The incident took place when the decorated chariot of Kaliamman temple was being taken around important roads near the place of worship as part of Vaikasi festival.

A senior police officer said, “The chariot suddenly overturned and two people died when the chariot was hit by a wooden wheel.”

He said that the devotees pulling the chariot and the people watching the procession immediately rushed to rescue the people trapped under the chariot.

The deceased have been identified as C Manoharan (57) and G Saravanan (50) of the district.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased. In a statement in Chennai, he said four people have been injured in the accident and are undergoing treatment at the Dharmapuri Government Medical College Hospital.

Apart from the ex-gratia to the families of the two killed, Stalin announced an amount of Rs 50,000 each for the injured persons, which would be provided from the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund (CMPRF).
