Srinagar:

Two terrorists were killed in an operation by security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district on Saturday.

In the last 22 days, 17 terrorists have been killed in over a dozen encounters in the Valley as the new year begins with security forces intensifying their operations against terrorists.

Police said an operation was launched in Kilbal village of Shopian district following information about the presence of terrorists. Two terrorists were killed in the encounter that followed.

The core group meeting of the security forces on Friday said that continuous operations are launched against terrorists on the basis of human intelligence and this has helped them in minimizing the collateral damage during the operation.

Local support is considered important in counter-terrorist operations and terrorist activities have decreased in the past year.

The meeting was attended by Lt Gen DP Pandey, Corps Commander of the Army’s 15th Corps, and Dilbagh Singh, Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police, apart from senior officers of the Army and paramilitary forces.

The core group said in a statement that the ceasefire along the Line of Control between the Indian and Pakistani forces has led to an improvement in the security situation along the border. The infiltration of terrorists from Pakistan has come down. However, in the meeting the security forces have been asked to remain alert as there are intelligence inputs that terrorist launch pads are still active across the Line of Control.
