20 killed in fire at Russian home for the elderly: report

Authorities said many homes for the elderly across Russia are operating without registration.

At least 20 people were killed in a fire on Friday at an unregistered old people’s home in the Siberian city of Kemerovo, Tass news agency reported, citing emergency services.

The agency quoted fire safety officials as saying that the second floor of the building was completely gutted. The fire was brought under control.

“At the site of the fire, rescuers are working on the wreckage in conditions of low air temperature. According to the latest data, 20 people died,” the report said.

Authorities said many homes for the elderly operated without registration across Russia and could not be subject to inspection because they were officially considered private property.
