In a major political development, 21 MLAs of the Naga People’s Front (NPF) on Friday joined Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio’s Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP). NDPP spokesperson Merentoshi R Jamir said that after these NPF MLAs, who earlier had 25 MLAs, the party now has 42 MLAs in the 60-member assembly.

While the NPF has four MLAs, the BJP has 12 and two independents. Assembly Speaker Sharingan Longkumer accepted the decision of 21 NPF MLAs to switch parties.

The development came ahead of next year’s assembly elections, and two days later, NPF president Shurhojeli Lijitsu told reporters that the party would contest the elections on its own.

Chief Minister Rio and BJP president Temjen Imna Along have said they will continue the alliance and fight the 2018 election 40-20 with a seat-sharing formula.

The NPF had joined the ruling People’s Democratic Alliance in August last year, forming the opposition-less government United Democratic Alliance (UDA) in the state with the aim of taking forward the Naga political issue. Minister and government spokeswoman Niba Kronu said that despite the new developments, the UDA would continue to function.

As for political leaders, it is up to the MLAs to join any other party, he said, adding that the remaining four NPF MLAs remain in the UDA. According to the NDPP spokesperson, the BJP was aware of the development.

Kronu stressed that a strong regional and national party is needed to work together.
