Kottayam:

A man stabbed his classmate to death at Pala St Thomas’ College near Kottayam on Friday.

Police said Nithina, 21, a student of Pala St Thomas College, was stabbed in the neck by her classmate Abhishek when she had come to the college to appear for an examination.

The police arrested the accused from the campus itself.

Police had earlier said, “The incident happened in the afternoon. The couple was in a relationship earlier.”

Witnesses told the media that they had a fight after which he slit her neck with a sharp object.

Expressing concern over the incident, Higher Education Minister R Bindu said girls also have the freedom to choose and the state government will take steps to protect their rights.

Bindu told the media that it is worrying that such incidents are being repeated among the youth in a society like Kerala.

“This phenomenon points to a lack of mental well-being among youth. It also points to the importance they attach to the idea of ”keeping” their minds …. which has its roots in social attitudes that value There are things to achieve. It is highly reprehensible that love ends in vengeful murder,” she said.

The minister also said that the government will strengthen the biography project in government colleges for counseling of students.

The Higher Education Minister said, “Girls also have the freedom and right to choose. This cannot be ignored. We will take steps to protect their rights.”

Similar incidents have taken place in the state in the past one year, most recently in August when a 24-year-old dental student was shot dead, who later killed himself.
