2,145 FIRs registered for violation of election code of conduct during UP elections

A total of 2,145 FIRs were registered for alleged violation of the model code of conduct during the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, the state’s chief electoral officer said. He said that since the model code of conduct came into force on January 8, over Rs 103.56 crore in cash, 17,640 kg of narcotics worth Rs 48.47 crore and over 22.94 liters of liquor worth Rs 62.13 crore have been seized.

“Preventive action has been taken against 32.99 lakh people across the state under the provisions of CrPC, while 2,145 FIRs were registered under various sections for violation of model code of conduct, of which 49 were registered under various sections on March 7. Chief Electoral Officer Ajay Kumar Shukla said after the seventh and final phase of polling on Monday. “So far 8.96 lakh licensed arms have been deposited, 2,080 licenses have been cancelled, while 631 licenses have been confiscated,” Shukla said. In addition, 10,233 arms, 10,582 cartridges, 232 explosives and 336 bombs were confiscated, while 186 factories carrying out illegal manufacturing were seized. The police had busted the weapons till March 7.

Apart from this, the police and the Income Tax Department have also seized 429 kg of precious metal worth about Rs 40.71 crore. Voting for 403 assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh was held in seven phases from February 10 to March 7. The counting of votes will take place on March 10.
