26 Naxalites killed, four policemen injured in encounter in Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli district

The encounter took place in the morning at Korchi in Mardintola forest area, when a team of C-60 police commandos was conducting a search operation.

At least 26 Naxals were killed in an encounter with police on Saturday in Gadchiroli district of eastern Maharashtra, 900 km from Mumbai.

District Superintendent of Police Ankit Goel said, “We have recovered the bodies of 26 Naxalites from the forest so far.”

Mr Goel said the encounter took place in the morning at Korchi in Mardintola forest area when a team of C-60 police commandos led by Additional Superintendent of Police Soumya Munde was conducting a search operation.

Although the identity of the slain Maoists is yet to be ascertained, but according to sources, a top rebel leader is suspected to be involved.

Officials had earlier said that four police personnel were also seriously injured in the action and were airlifted to Nagpur for treatment.

The district is situated on the border of Chhattisgarh.
