28-year-old from Odisha sets Guinness World Record for maximum distance covered in wheelchair set by IIT Madras

A 28-year-old paralyzed youth from Puri, Odisha, Kamala Kanta Nayak, created a new Guinness World Record for the maximum distance covered in a wheelchair after using NeoFly. He covered a distance of 215 km in 24 hours in a wheelchair which he made Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, Earlier in 2007, Mario Trinidad of Portugal set the record after covering a distance of 182 kilometers in 24 hours at the Villa Real Stadium in Villa Real, Portugal.

IIT Madras’s TTK Center for Rehabilitation Research and Device Development (R2D2) along with its start-up, NeoMotion last year developed a motorized wheelchair for differently abled. Known as NeoBolt, it is designed to help different people commuting on their own. The motorized machine can be detached and reattached to the wheelchair if needed.

The NeoBolt converts the NeoFly into a “safe, road-worthy vehicle that can navigate any kind of terrain we might typically encounter – drive through rough roads or climb a steep slope,” IIT Madras had earlier said that it has suspension To absorb shock.

Sujatha Srinivasan, head of R2D2, said that the wheelchair was designed according to the body of the protagonist to provide him with the right comfort, ergonomics and other elements. From the center of gravity to the selection of the appropriate wheel size, everything was done to ensure the hero’s energy was used effectively during the long run of the Guinness World Record. IIT Madras said that Nayak trained himself on this NeoFly wheelchair for over four years before attempting to set a world record.

Initially, the NeoFly can be adjusted in 18 different ways to fit each person’s body and environment. After NeoFly, NeoMotion decided that they wanted to not only provide wheelchair users with a personalized wheelchair experience, but to enable different people to be independent.

The device, a motorized wheelchair (Neobolt) powered by a lithium-ion battery, can go up to a maximum speed of 25 km per hour and travel a distance of 30 km per charge. This motorized wheelchair is available at a price of Rs 95,000 inclusive of vehicle tax and will be ordered within four months.
