32,803 cases of corona and 173 deaths in Kerala; TPR close to 19% | Thiruvananthapuram News – Times of India

Kochi: Kerala 32,803 newly recorded covid Cases on Wednesday – Highest one-day increase in the number of cases after 99 days.
During the last 24 hours, 1,74,854 samples were tested. The test positivity rate (TPR) remained above 15% on the sixteenth day at 18.76%. 173 deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours, taking the total death toll in the state to 20,961.
While 21,610 people have recovered from the infection, the number of active patients in the state has gone up to 2,29,912. Two districts- Thrissur and Ernakulam were the worst affected and have reported over 4,000 cases. Giving district wise details, the officials said Thrissur 4,425 cases were reported, Ernakulam 4,324, Kozhikode 3,251, Malappuram 3,099, kollam 2,663, Thiruvananthapuram 2,579, Palakkad 2,309, Kottayam 2,263, Alappuzha 1,975, Kannur 1,657, Pathanamthitta 1,363, Wayanad 1,151, Idukki 1,130 and Kasaragod 614.
With Kerala accounting for around 72% of the new cases in India, there is growing demand from the Center to bring in a “strict lockdown” and containment in the state. The state has been imposing restrictions on the basis of weekly infection population ratio (WIPR). WIPR is above 7% in 296 wards in local bodies across the state and out of these 81 wards are in urban areas while 215 are in rural areas. Health officials said that strict restrictions are being imposed in these wards.
Of the new cases, 31,380 people were infected by local transmission, while 154 persons had come from outside the state. The source of infection has not been traced in 1,161 people.
Presently 5,24,380 are in home or institutional quarantine and 32,705 are under hospital surveillance.
Though most healthcare workers have been vaccinated, the number of health workers being vulnerable to the infection is rising with 108 testing positive on Wednesday.
