Violence broke out in parts of Kanpur after Friday prayers

Kanpur:

Thirty-six people have been arrested so far in connection with the violence that broke out in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur on Friday over alleged derogatory remarks on Prophet Muhammad by a BJP spokesperson, police said today.

The arrests were made after police scrutinized video clips to identify those involved in the violence, officials said, adding that three First Information Reports or FIRs have been registered in the matter.

Police Commissioner Vijay Singh Meena said, “More people are being identified on the basis of the video.”

He said that action would be taken against the conspirators under the Gangster Act and their property would be confiscated.

Heavy security arrangements have been made in the city to maintain law and order and avoid any untoward incident.

Violence erupted in parts of Kanpur after Friday prayers as members of two groups against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Nupur Sharma recently called for the closure of markets in protest against her alleged remarks against Prophet Mohammad. Officials said 13 policemen and thirty others from both sides were injured in the clashes.

“Some youths numbering 50-100 suddenly came out on the streets and started raising slogans. Another group protested and it escalated to stone pelting. Around eight to ten policemen were present at the spot, who tried to intervene. and controlled the situation. To some extent. The control room was immediately informed and senior officials including me reached the spot within 10 minutes,” Mr. Meena had said yesterday.
