New Delhi: India witnessed an estimated 4,90,000 cyber attacks originating from Pakistan during the T20 World Cup match between the men’s cricket teams of the countries on 24 October.

Sectrio, the cyber security division of Bengaluru-based telecom analytics firm Subex, wrote a blog post On the day India lost the match to Pakistan in Dubai by 10 wickets, while it is common for cyber attacks to increase when geopolitical tensions erupt, it is “the first time that such cyber attacks have been linked to a sporting event”. In which teams are included in the subcontinent”.

The Sectrio blog said that for a period of six days prior to October 24, its honey pot network in India recorded a “steady” number of cyber attacks – about 3 million a day.

Sectrio monitors incoming cyber attacks in India through ‘honey pots’ placed in India, which are a “A sacrificial computer system intended to attract cyberattacksSo that researchers can study how hackers work.

“However, on 24 October, the number of attacks increased substantially to the 490,000 mark, which was significantly reduced by midnight Indian Standard Time,” the blog said.

“Most of the cyber attacks were coming directly from a certain country’s IP address in the west of India (no prizes for guessing),” it added.

ThePrint has credibly learned that the cyber attacks from Pakistan peaked around 9 pm India time on 24 October, which was almost half of the match. Sectrio traces these attacks to about four state-backed hacker groups in Pakistan, in addition to a few independent hackers.

Sectrio says that “some IP addresses from Southeast Asia and Eastern Europe” were found to be participating in these attacks on India as well. However, these IP addresses are associated with botnets that are known to be hijacked and can be purchased by anyone in any country to attack targets.

A botnet is a network”hijacked computer equipmentWhich can be used to carry out scams and cyber attacks.
