4 MNS workers arrested for playing ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ on loudspeaker outside Sena Bhawan in Mumbai

Mumbai Police on Sunday detained four Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers for playing ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ on loudspeakers in front of Shiv Sena headquarters in Dadar area. He said the police have also seized a loudspeaker, a cab on which he was mounted and other items.

On 2 April, MNS chief Raj Thackeray had demanded that loudspeakers in mosques be switched off and said that if this was not stopped, “there will be speakers outside mosques playing ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ at high volume”.

He had also criticized NCP chief Sharad Pawar, whose party shares power in Maharashtra with Shiv Sena and Congress, accusing him of “playing the caste card and dividing society from time to time”.

He had also taken a dig at Maharashtra Chief Minister and his cousin Uddhav Thackeray. On Sunday morning, after being alerted about MNS members playing religious hymns on loudspeakers outside Sena Bhavan, police reached the spot and MNS functionary Yashwant Killedar and arrested three. An official of Shivaji Park police station said that other workers of the organisation.

After his detention, several MNS workers gathered at a small temple located near the police station premises and started singing ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ and other religious songs. “We have detained four MNS workers for playing loudspeakers in front of Sena Bhawan. We are investigating further in the matter,” said the police officer.

Last Sunday, some MNS workers played ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ in front of the party office in Kalyan town of neighboring Thane district.
