A total of 400 companies of central forces will be deployed in Tripura to ensure free and fair assembly elections later this month, a senior police officer said on Wednesday.

Voting for the 60-member assembly will be held on February 16.

“Around 200 companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) will arrive here by the first week of February for area domination, patrolling and flag marches, besides anti-insurgency operations,” Assistant Inspector General (Law and Order) Jyotishman Das Chowdhary said.

Altogether 400 companies of central forces will be deployed in the state to ensure free, fair and peaceful elections. This will be in addition to the state’s own security personnel and BSF personnel guarding the India-Bangladesh border.

He said that out of 3,328 polling stations, 1,100 have been identified as ‘sensitive’ and 28 as ‘critical’.

“A special drive for vehicle checking has been launched and 11,000 vehicles have been inspected so far,” Chowdhury said.

He said that in the last few weeks, the security forces have seized contraband goods worth Rs 5.89 crore. He said law enforcement agencies have also recovered weapons.

Election The Commission has already launched the ‘Zero Polling Violence’ campaign in the northeastern state.
