The temperature in Anantapur city on Thursday afternoon soared to 43.1 degrees Celsius, the highest ever recorded for the 2022 summer season, and it literally sent people home to cold shelters.
The only saving grace was the lack of power cuts, which had become a common occurrence during the last 20 days. The normal day maximum temperature for April in Anantapur is 39.4 degrees Celsius, but this sudden 4 degree variance made people feel the change.
While people stayed indoors in the afternoon, the children returning from school due to early morning classes for the summer had to face a tough time in the afternoon. While light clouds were visible in the morning, by noon the mercury suddenly rose and remained at 40 degrees even at 6 pm with a warm wind blowing from the west.
According to the India Meteorological Department, it was the third highest in the last decade. The highest recorded was 44.5 °C in April of any year since 2012, which was on April 26, 2016 and the next highest was 43.7 °C on April 28, 2017, and the third highest was on Thursday.
The IMD has predicted the temperature to be above 40 degree Celsius and may go up to 41.5 degree by April 27 with partly cloudy sky.
Kurnool remains hot
Kurnool city recorded 42.3 degrees Celsius and the IMD predicted the temperature in Kurnool to be above 41 degrees Celsius till April 27. Kurnool also recorded the highest temperature of 45.1 °C in April in any year (after 2012). was recorded on 26 April. , 2016 and 43.6 °C on April 19, 2017 and April 25, 2019. The normal day high temperature in April for Kurnool city is 40.1 degree Celsius.
