5.83 crore income tax returns filed for 2020-21

The official said that this time over 72 lakh ITRs were filed on the last day (Sunday).

The Income Tax Department has received around 5.83 crore tax returns, mainly from the salaried and individual category of taxpayers, till the end of the filing session on July 31 of the financial year 2021-22, officials said on Monday.

The latest numbers are almost the same as the previous financial year (2020-21).

The due date for filing Income Tax Return (ITR) by the salaried class and individual category taxpayers, who are yet to get their accounts audited for the financial year ending March 31, 2022, was July 31 (Sunday).

A senior official said, “Till the end of July 31, we have received around 5.83 crore returns. The data is being collated to arrive at the actual figures.”

The official said that during the last financial year, the due date of which was extended till December 31, 2021, almost the same number – 5.89 crore – were filed.

The official said that this time over 72 lakh ITRs were filed on the last day (Sunday).

As per the latest rules, a late fee of Rs 5,000 will be payable to those filing ITR by December 31 of the assessment year 2022-23 (with an annual income of more than Rs 5 lakh).

Individuals with an annual income of less than Rs 5 lakh will have to pay a late fee of Rs 1,000 for filing delayed returns.

In addition, those who have outstanding tax dues will have to pay an additional 1 per cent interest per month for late filing.

Late fee will not be applicable to taxpayers whose income is below the taxable limit.
