5 died due to drinking suspected spurious liquor in Bihar’s Saran district

Bihar Poisonous Liquor Tragedy: Saran DM said deaths have been reported from different villages (Representational)

Patna:

At least five people have died in Bihar’s Saran district in what appears to be another case of suspected Hooch tragedy in the arid state, officials said on Friday.

According to Saran District Magistrate Rajesh Meena, information about the death has been received from different villages of Amnore and Maker blocks.

“We have received information about five deaths. The bodies of two of the deceased have been sent for postmortem. Some of the bereaved family members have alleged the deaths due to consumption of alcohol,” the DM at district headquarters Chaura said.

He said that in the joint raids conducted by the police and the Excise Department in both the blocks, illegal liquor trade has been detected and has promised strict action against all the accused.

The incident comes less than a week after 11 people died after consuming spurious liquor in Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s home district of Nalanda.

Earlier, around Diwali, over 40 people had taken their lives in West Champaran, Gopalganj, Muzaffarpur and Samastipur districts.

In April 2016, a year after Mr. Kumar made a similar promise to the women of the state, the sale and consumption of alcohol was completely banned in Bihar.

However, the implementation of the same by his government has been the subject of criticism by the opposition and sometimes by the judiciary.
