5 MPs including Tharoor, Tiwari, Karti Chidambaram expressed concern over transparency, fairness in Congress chief elections

Five Congress MPs have written to AICC’s Central Election Authority chief Madhusudan Mistry expressing concern about the “transparency and fairness” of the party chief’s election and demanding that the PCC form the electoral college to all voters and potential candidates. In a joint letter to Mistry on September 6, Congress Lok Sabha members Shashi Tharoor, Manish Tewari, Karti Chidambaram, Pradyut Bordoloi and Abdul Khaleque had said that this list should be made available to ascertain who is entitled to nominate candidates. And who is entitled? To vote.

“In the case of CEA (Central) Election Authority) has any concerns regarding the public release of electoral rolls, it should put in place a mechanism to securely share this information with all voters and potential candidates. The MPs, in their letter to Mistry, said voters and candidates cannot be expected to visit all 28 Pradesh Congress Committees (PCCs) and units of nine Union Territories across the country for verification of electoral rolls.

He said that being a Congress MP, he is concerned about transparency and fairness in the election process of the party president. “It is unfortunate that our demand for release of voter list is being misinterpreted. We are not suggesting that any internal party document should be released in such a way as to give opportunity to those who wish to be ill with us, who may misuse the information contained therein,” the MPs said. He said he is of the firm view that before the nomination process begins, the party’s CEA should provide a list of PCC representatives that make up the electoral college. The MPs said that by providing the list, any unnecessary arbitrariness in the election process would be removed.

“As long as this demand is met, our concern about transparency – an essential condition in any free and fair election – will be met,” the letter said. The letter comes a day after the party began its ambitious ‘Bharat Jodi Yatra’ from Kanyakumari to Kashmir on Wednesday.

Speaking on party elections, Rahul Gandhi Speaking at a press conference in Kanyakumari on Friday, he said he had taken his decision to assume the post of party president, but did not reveal his plans. He said he would give his reasons if he does not contest the upcoming elections for the post.

Asked whether he would become the Congress president, he said, “Whether I will be the president or not, it will be clear when the Congress party’s presidential elections are held.”

“Wait till that time. When that time (come), you will see. And if I don’t stand up, you can ask me ‘why didn’t you stand up’ and I will answer the question for you,” Gandhi told reporters.

Sources said Tharoor and Bordoloi had earlier also written separate letters to Mistry demanding publication of the electoral rolls. Tharoor and Tiwari were among a group of 23 leaders who wrote to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi in 2020 demanding organizational change. Tharoor is contemplating contesting for the post of party president.

Last month, Tiwari and Chidambaram along with Tharoor had demanded that the electoral rolls be made public to ensure transparency. Tiwari had objected to the Congress not disclosing the names of voters for the election of the next party president and said the list should be published to all. Mistry, however, said that the elections are being held in a transparent manner and the entire election process is free and fair. He had said that as per the party’s constitution the electoral roll cannot be made public but it can be made available to any person contesting the election.

The notification for the election of Congress President will be out on September 22 and the process of filing nominations will be held from September 24 to September 30. The last date for withdrawal of nominations is October 8 and if required, the election will be held on October 2. 17 October. The results will come on October 19.
