“Ensuring availability of digital infrastructure in building campuses will require a holistic approach”

Telecom regulator TRAI will soon come out with recommendations that will improve telecom connectivity, especially with the introduction of 5G, a top official has said.

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) chairman PD Vaghela, during a virtual event organized by Digital Infrastructure Providers Association (DIPA), said it would be difficult to get 5G coverage inside the building as the signals would be transmitted on high frequencies which would cover very short distances. “Ensuring availability of digital infrastructure in building complexes will require a holistic approach, that too in a non-discriminatory manner. There is a major problem in gaining access to buildings by infrastructure providers, telecom service providers and other players. We have We have already prepared a consultation paper and very soon we will come out with a recommendation. This will require changes in the bye-laws and working with the states,” Mr. Vaghela said.

He said that a time would come when revenue would become secondary for the states and they would lay emphasis on digital connectivity.

Minister of State for Telecom Devusinh Chouhan said that digital connectivity empowers people at the grassroots level and the government is committed to support telecom infrastructure companies.

He said that while data usage is increasing in the country, prices have been declining since 2014.

The minister said the government has taken cognizance of network roll-out issues being faced by telecom companies and the DoT is working to address the concerns of telecom infrastructure companies.

Telecom Secretary K. Rajaraman said that continuous efforts are being made to bring down the cost of operating telecom services in the country and the recently announced telecom reforms are a step in that direction.

He said that the department is further working on measures to increase ease of doing business in this area.
