5G spectrum: Jio tops with Rs 14,000 crore deposits – Times of India

New Delhi: The stage is ready 5G auction, with companies making mandatory Earnest Money Deposit (EMD) of a total of Rs 21,800 crore. However, talks about Ambani’s much-anticipated confrontation with Adani failed as the conglomerate led by newcomer Gautam Adani refused huge commitments for airwave sales.
While the country’s largest mobile operator Jio deposited an EMD of Rs 14,000 crore, Adani Group – presented by adani data network (ADN) – gave only Rs 100 crore. This indicates that it may go for limited bandwidth capacity in some circles where it sees potential for captive enterprise telephony. Any major expansion steps are likely to be disclosed after the auction.
Bharti Airtel, the second largest operator, deposited an EMD of Rs 5,500 crore, while Vodafone Idea 2200 crore deposited.
The EMD collection of all the four applicants is much higher than the Rs 13,475 crore deposited in the 2021 auction, when three players (minus Adani) were in the fray. In the last auction, Jio spent Rs 57,123 crore to buy spectrum, Airtel Rs 18,699 crore and Vodafone Idea Rs 1,993 crore.
The EMD gives an indication of the company’s strategy and game plan to buy spectrum in the auction. It also determines the eligibility point for the applicant, on the basis of which a company purchases airwaves in telecom circles.
It is estimated that companies can spend around seven to eight times their deposited EMD. This means that the potential for the Adani group to become a major destroyer is almost impossible. Jio’s EMD deposit, on the other hand, shows that the company plans to stockpile large to acquire the next generation of mobile airwaves, which will put India among the coveted group of countries offering 5G telephony.
A total of 72GHz (GHz) spectrum worth at least Rs 4 lakh crore is being put on the block for auction starting July 26. While Adani’s entry into the fray had sparked pre-auction talks, the group has made it clear that it has no immediate plans to enter the consumer mobility space. It had said that its telecom sector is only to support its businesses by creating a private network that spans from airports to ports and power as well as data centres. With an EMD of Rs 14,000 crore, the eligibility marks allotted to Jio for the auction is 1,59,830, the highest among the list of four bidders, as per the details provided by the telecom ministry. The eligibility marks allotted to Airtel is 66,330, while that to Vodafone Idea is 29,370. Adani Data Networks got the qualifying marks of 1,650. The auction will be conducted for spectrum in various low (600MHz, 700MHz, 800MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHz, 2100MHz, 2300MHz), mid (3300MHz) and high (26GHz) frequency bands.
