66, over 50,000 people evacuated after 6.8-magnitude earthquake in China’s Sichuan province – Times of India

BEIJING/CHENGDU: The death toll from a magnitude 6.8 earthquake that struck southwest China has risen to 66 while rescue teams search for victims and survivors, local officials said on Tuesday.

Officials said 66 people were killed and more than 50,000 people were evacuated after the quake.

Fifteen people are missing and 253 have been injured, five in critical condition and 70 in critical condition, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
Of the injured, 175 have been sent to hospitals for further treatment and six medical teams are working at the disaster site.
The earthquake damaged homes, roads, water conservancy facilities, hydropower stations, telecommunications, and tourism and ecological infrastructure.
In Ganji Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, 243 rooms of residential houses collapsed and 13,010 rooms were damaged.
The quake also damaged power transmission lines and power outages in eight townships.
Several villages in Luding and Shimian counties were left isolated as roads leading to them were damaged. Boats are used to evacuate villagers, while transport officials have sent 19 teams to repair the roads to facilitate rescue efforts.
Sichuan has activated the highest level of emergency response to the earthquake. As of Tuesday morning, more than 6,600 firefighters, doctors and other rescue workers were engaged in the rescue and search operation.
