7 drown after getting caught in quicksand in Tamil Nadu river

The victims reportedly got stuck in the sand while bathing in the Gedilam river.

Seven members of a family, including three children, drowned in Tamil Nadu’s Cuddalore district on Sunday after they were trapped in sand while bathing in a river.

The victims were reportedly taking a bath in the Gedilam river when they got stuck in the sand.

Chief Minister MK Stalin has expressed grief and announced Rs 5 lakh for the family from the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund.

Mr Stalin called for steps to be taken to prevent such incidents. He said that warning signs should be put up near the water bodies.

He said that the concerned authorities should impart first aid training to the people, especially those living near water bodies, to help them in times of crisis.

The Raj Bhavan, on its official Twitter handle, said Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi expressed condolences to the families of the victims.
