‘80% encroachment of Delhi can be said… Bulldozing home not right’: Kejriwal attacks MCD demolition drive

Commenting on the anti-encroachment drive in the national capital, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that ‘bulldozing people’s houses’ was not right. The AAP chief said that while he was also against illegal buildings, Delhi was not built in a ‘planned manner’ and ‘more than 80 per cent of Delhi can be called encroachment’.

“But if a person has the right papers then why is a bulldozer being used. this is not right. They have a plan to demolish all kutcha colonies and slums. 63 lakh people will face bulldozers,” Kejriwal said.

Three civic bodies are carrying out demolition in several parts of Delhi including Shaheen Bagh, Madanpur Khadar, New Friends Colony, Mangolpuri, Karol Bagh, Khyala and Lodhi Colony. Anti-encroachment drive by BJP-ruled municipal corporations began in the national capital after party president Adesh Gupta wrote letters to mayors to remove encroachments by illegal Rohingyas and Bangladeshis in the city.

“BJP is in MCD for the last 15 years. What has he done in these 15 years? He himself encroached by taking money.

“We will free Delhi from slums and build new homes for them. Will give time to those encroaching on roads…so that they can remove it.’ Don’t let anyone do any ‘gundagardi’ (hooliganism).

Kejriwal made this statement after holding a meeting with Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs regarding the anti-encroachment drive in the national capital.

The meeting, which began at around 11 am, was initially scheduled for May 14, but was canceled due to a massive building fire in Mundka the previous day, in which 27 people lost their lives.

“Everyone will share their views to counter the BJP. BJP controlled MCD (Municipal Corporation of Delhi) has launched encroachment drive, which we have to stop to save the people of Delhi. People’s houses are being demolished in the name of encroachment. AAP stands with the common people of Delhi.”

Earlier, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia had written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah requesting him to stop the encroachment drive.

AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan was also arrested during the demolition drive. He was later granted bail by the Saket court.
