Secunderabad residents protest against the closure of over 20 roads in the cantonment area

Residents of Secunderabad in Telangana are protesting against the closure of 21 roads in the cantonment area. Demanding right of way, residents said that roads have been erected, or barricades and security checks have been done, blocking their way.
For more than seven years, residents of north and northeast Hyderabad have been protesting the alleged illegal closure of 21 roads in the Secunderabad cantonment area by the local military authority. For some, this has led to a journey of 8 km from a journey of 800 m.
Although the Andhra Pradesh High Court had allowed the closure in September 2014 citing security reasons, later on the appeal of residents, the then Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and the Army Headquarters ordered the roads to be opened in May 2018.
Still, residents say, the local military authority has not complied and even walls have come up, blocking the passage. For example, under RK Puram ROB or road overbridge, the service road has been blocked by making a wall and the lawn has been increased inside. At Bolarum Golf Course, the roads are covered by the extended golf course.
Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao said that unlike other cantonments, the land under consideration belongs to the state government.
CS Chandrashekhar, Secretary, Federation of Federation said, “We request the Defense Minister, Army Headquarters, Chief of Defense Staff to immediately intervene and reopen these roads illegally closed by the local army. If you want to shut it down, then close it as per procedure.” North Eastern Colonies.
Chandrashekhar said, “We have to listen. We are the voice of citizens and our objections are valid. Our ambulance is being stopped. Our senior citizens are passing through hell. We don’t have street lights on this 3.5 kilometer road.” ” , indicating that proper procedure has not been followed for closure of any road.
With tensions rising now, Telangana minister KT Rama Rao has threatened to cut power and water supplies if the defense authority continues to harass civilians and block development.
“The central government and local military officials in the cantonment are unnecessarily harassing our citizens of Hyderabad. We have complained many times. They block roads, they build check dams to block drains. This is not good. Telangana is not a separate country. We will not hesitate to take drastic action like cutting water or electricity supply. We need to live together, coexist. On behalf of our people, we have to do this to convince them Might have to be,” KTR said at the state gathering.

There are 62 cantonments in India and they were originally set up by the British to house soldiers, soldiers’ families and civilians, who supplied goods and services to the soldiers. The central government directly administers the cantonments.
