’83’ will hit OTT only after eight-week theatrical run, says producer

There was speculation that the film would start streaming on the OTT platform if more restrictions were imposed in the country due to the recent spike in coronavirus cases.

The makers on Thursday said that Kabir Khan’s cricket-drama “83” will release on digital and TV only if it runs for at least eight weeks.

The film, starring Ranveer Singh as Kapil Dev, released on December 24 to rave reviews but failed to create the required frenzy at the box office on which the business was banking.

There was speculation that “83”, presented by Reliance Entertainment and Phantom Films, will start streaming on OTT platforms if more restrictions are imposed due to the recent spike in coronavirus cases in the country.

However, Shibasish Sarkar, Group CEO, Reliance Entertainment, said, “The film ’83’ will be released globally on digital platforms or satellite television after running for at least 8 weeks.” The film chronicles India’s victory under the captaincy of Kapil Dev, when the team won its first World Cup trophy in 1983 by defeating West Indies in the final.

Released in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam, ’83’ is inching towards touching the Rs 100 crore mark at the domestic box office.
