9 dead as bus falls in Andhra river, Rs 5 lakh compensation announced

The driver is also among those killed in the accident.

West Godavari (Andhra Pradesh):

Nine people were killed when an Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) bus fell into a drain in West Godavari district of the state today.

District Superintendent of Police Rahul Dev Sharma told news agency ANI, “Nine people were killed and 22 seriously injured in the bus accident. A total of 47 passengers were on board the bus.”

The accident took place at around 12:30 pm when the bus going from Velerupadu to Jangareddygudem crossed the village of Ashwavaopet. The police officer said that it fell into the Jaleru drain as the driver lost control of the vehicle and suddenly took a left turn.

The driver was also among those killed in the incident. All the injured have been admitted to the hospital.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has announced Rs 5 lakh as compensation to the families of the victims and ordered the district collector to provide better medical treatment to the injured.

According to a statement from the governor’s office, Andhra Pradesh Governor Harichandan expressed grief over the accident and directed officials to provide immediate healthcare to the injured and extended his heartfelt condolences to the family members of the victims.

Former Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu was also among those who expressed condolences.
