92% of Hiring Managers Say Data Science Is a Huge Gap for the Skilled Force

According to a study conducted by edtech company Great Learning, 92 percent of hiring managers said they have faced a shortage when it comes to data science talent, with the job industry seeing a massive supply crunch . While 57 per cent believe that the gap between supply and demand exists only at the entry level and 27 per cent believe that the talent gap exists in mid-level roles of team lead and project management.

40 percent of the hiring managers surveyed consider a formal qualification in data science to be essential for a career in this field. Natural language processing (NLP) had the largest skill deficits identified by 15 percent of hiring managers, followed by artificial intelligence (12 percent), automation (11 percent), computer vision (CV) (10 percent) . , analytics (9 percent) and machine learning (7 percent).

With recruitment activity returning to pre-pandemic levels, the report yields a range of insights on recruitment trends, talent demand, skill gaps and other challenges in hiring. A little over half of the hiring managers surveyed represented B2B enterprises, nearly a quarter represented B2C companies and the rest in government and other sectors such as BFSI, IT/ITES, retail, e-commerce, telecom, Engineering and Manufacturing included.

Bengaluru has taken the poll position as the leading city for hiring talent in data science, with 54 per cent of hiring and recruiting managers choosing it as the preferred destination for hiring data science professionals. It was followed by Hyderabad with 15 per cent, Delhi NCR and Pune with 9 per cent and 6 per cent respectively, followed by Mumbai and Chennai with 5 per cent.

Furthermore, the gender gap continues to be a problem not only in the data science sector but also in the wider technology segment. 68 percent of hiring managers indicated that a gender gap exists in the talent pool. Reasons behind this include gender-based pay disparity in the data science space, low awareness of opportunities in the space among the fair sex and lack of adequate support from enterprises in ensuring work life balance.
