NEW DELHI: Around 96 per cent schools and 92 per cent students across 24 states participated in the National Achievement Survey (NAS) conducted across the country on Friday, according to preliminary estimates shared by the education ministry.

The survey was conducted in different modes of education as available in sample schools. The survey, which assesses the competencies developed by students at the third, fifth and eighth grade levels, is conducted every three years. The survey was last conducted in 2017 and was due in 2020. However, due to the COVID-19 situation, it was postponed till this year.

“NAS 2021 is the first achievement survey after the release of the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP). The assessment will be used to benchmark students’ learning against criteria such as process skills and learning outcomes. NAS 2021 Competency-Based Assessment System Content and memory-based assessment as envisaged by NEP 2020,” the official said.

“In addition to student achievement tests, student questionnaires, teachers’ questionnaires and school questionnaires were also obtained to understand the different settings and perspectives of students, teachers and schools. While equipment development, testing, finalization of test items, sampling of schools etc. was done by NCERT, the actual administration of testing in sample schools was done by CBSE in collaboration with the respective states and union territories.

The survey, which included government, government-aided and private schools, will help assess learning gaps and new learnings during the pandemic, and take remedial measures.
