The rupee on Friday depreciated 9 paise to close at 82.85 (provisional) against the US dollar amid heavy selling pressure in domestic equities and a stronger greenback overseas.
However, forex traders said fall in crude oil prices limited the rupee’s losses.

Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, rose 0.13% to 104.69.
Global oil benchmark Brent crude futures fell 2.29% to $79.35 a barrel.
In the domestic equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex declined 461.22 points, or 0.75%, to close at 61,337.81. The broader NSE Nifty fell 145.90 points, or 0.79%, to 18,269.
Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) turned net sellers in the capital market on Thursday as they sold shares worth ₹710.74 crore, according to exchange data.
