Musk-mandated changes at Twitter from reducing staff to free verification check marks seen as a stamp of authenticity have alienated users and advertisers.
Social media platform Twitter Inc is purging accounts that have had no activity for several years, CEO Elon Musk said in a tweet on Monday.
Elon Musk announced on Monday that Twitter is canceling accounts that have not been used for a long time.
The move comes as Musk seeks to increase engagement and money-making opportunities on the online platform he bought last year for $44 billion.
“We’re purging accounts that haven’t had any activity in years, so you’ll probably see a drop in follower counts,” Musk said in a tweet.

Musk-mandated changes at Twitter from reducing staff to free verification check marks seen as a stamp of authenticity have alienated users and advertisers.
Twitter’s blue ticks were reinstated on some media, celebrity and other high profile accounts in late April – a move opposed by many recipients.
Musk tweeted at the time that he was “personally paying for some (subscriptions).”
Several official media accounts, including AFP, regained a tick, which has not subscribed to Twitter Blue.
The reinstated ticks didn’t attract back American public radio NPR, which suspended activity on its accounts in mid-April.
The broadcaster was among those opposed to the “state-affiliated” and “government-funded” labels attached to Twitter, which were previously reserved for non-independent media funded by autocratic governments.
Since Musk bought Twitter, the company has relaxed moderation of content on the network, banning many users for posting messages that spread hate or misinformation.
Market trackers say Twitter’s revenue has declined as advertisers avoid the platform.
