Mumbai Central Railway Station now has pod rooms that passengers can book for a short period of time.
Ministry of Railways has shared a glimpse of the new pod room inaugurated at Mumbai Central Railway Station today. Pod Concept Retiring Rooms will provide world class comfort to the travelers at affordable rates.
A pod hotel, also known as a capsule hotel, consists of several small rooms or “pods” that each contain a single bed. These hotels were first started in Japan to provide affordable yet comfortable accommodation to travelers, and have recently seen a rise in popularity in India. UrbanPod was one of the first boutique pod hotels to open in India.
Images shared by the Ministry of Railways show that the Urbanpod Hotel at Mumbai Central station in Maharashtra has a row of pod rooms that passengers can book for a short period of time.
The new pod room in Mumbai Central has been decked out in muted shades of beige, brown and white. The pods have single beds, mirrors, and private safes, among other amenities.
Sharing the pictures on Twitter, the Ministry of Railways wrote, “Whether traveling by train on a short business trip or taking a group of students on a tour, the POD rooms at Mumbai Central Station are here to make your journey comfortable and easy.”

Pictures of capsule-like rooms have created panic on social media.
“Wow. This is awesome,” wrote one Twitter user. “Unbelievable,” said another.
Many said they expected the pod room to be well maintained.
It looks super cool in the pictures. However, I’m not sure how much of a clean option this would be at the moment, given that ordinary Indian Railways passengers have been known to abuse privileges (like the one seen in the inauguration of Tejas).
