A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck Japan’s northwestern Chiba Prefecture

The earthquake was measured at an initial depth of 80 kilometers (50 mi). According to CNN teams, strong tremors were felt in Tokyo.

Journalists from Tokyo-based CNN said the quake was “heartbreaking” and was in fact very strong.

“We have a safety alert app on our phone. It shut down just moments before I said ‘There’s an earthquake.’ ,” Correspondent Blake Essig said.

He said photo frames, glasses and utensils fell from the walls and shelves. “Definitely heart pounding.”

Another CNN correspondent in Tokyo, Selina Wang, said the continuous tremors lasted more than 30 seconds. An alarm in his building urged residents to remain calm and reminded them that the structure was earthquake-proof.
