A heated debate in the Delhi Assembly over the new excise policy; Sisodia said BJP ‘standing’

A heated debate broke out between the AAP and the BJP over the new excise policy in the Delhi Assembly on Tuesday, with Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia claiming that the opposition was “bothered by withholding its Rs 3,500 crore earnings through commission”. Leader of Opposition Ramveer Singh Bidhuri challenged that either BJP would stop liquor contracts in residential areas or he would quit politics.

He alleged that 90 percent of the liquor contracts being opened under the new policy violate the Delhi Master Plan. The BJP MLA said in the House, “I take oath of Lord Ram that I will get liquor shops closed in residential areas or leave politics.”

Sisodia said that with the new excise policy, the revenue from sale of liquor in Delhi has increased from Rs 6,000 crore to Rs 9,500 crore. Under Arvind Kejriwal’s leadership, the Delhi government shut down 3,977 illicit liquor shops in Delhi, he said, adding, “The new policy stopped theft of Rs 3,500 crore which earlier went to BJP leaders. “Now this money has been added to the revenue of the Delhi government,” the deputy chief minister said.

He dubbed the Delhi Development Authority’s master plan a ‘commission plan’ and a ‘disaster plan’, aimed at preventing people from legally opening shops in almost half of Delhi. BJP MLA Ajay Mahawar said, “Those opposing privatization have privatized liquor shops. gathering in Delhi,” he said.

He said that compared to BJP-ruled states, Delhi will have around one liquor store per 30,000 people, which is less than one liquor store for every 11,000 people in Bengaluru, one for every 2,000 people in Gurgaon, Ghaziabad.
