While many actors and celebrities have joined Punjab politics to add a little bit of star power to the election campaigns, not everyone has been successful. This time the latest entrant is popular and controversial singer Sidhu Moosewala, who joined the Congress last week.
Amid reports of Moosewala contesting from Mansa in Malwa region, residents have already laid out an 11-point agenda that the singer needs to work on even though the candidate list is finalised.
Looking at the past, many singers and actors have not performed well in the electoral battlefield. Punjabi actor and comedian Gurpreet Ghuggi and singer-actor Jassi Jasraj, who joined parties and contested elections, were not very successful.
Ghuggi came into limelight in his short-lived political career when he joined the Aam Aadmi Party in 2014. He was the convener of the party’s state unit, but was soon replaced by comedian-turned-Sangrur MP Bhagwant Mann. After that Ghuggi not only left AAP but also left politics and never looked back.
Jasraj also had a short and unsuccessful tenure. In 2014, he joined AAP hoping to carve a niche for himself, but soon he joined the Punjab Democratic Alliance (PDA) started by rebel AAP and now Congress leader Sukhpal Khaira. Jasraj unsuccessfully contested from Sangrur with PDA and thus decided to stay away from active politics.
But not everyone’s report card is bad. Noted Punjabi folk singer Mohammad Sadiq had surprised everyone when he decided to contest the 2012 assembly elections on a Congress ticket by defeating Akali leader Darbari Singh Guru. His political career was on the rise, and he remains strong even at the age of 79 and is a Lok Sabha MP from Faridkot. He was a successful MLA from Bhadaur from 2012 to 2017.
Although Mann has never been able to display any of his governance skills, he has been in politics since 2014. After winning two consecutive Lok Sabha elections, the former stand-up comedian known for his statements always made headlines for both the rights. And the wrong reason. This time he hopes that AAP will declare him as the chief ministerial face of Punjab.
The other celebrity who was successful in Punjab was Vinod Khanna, a former Gurdaspur actor.
