Known as the Garden City, Bangalore remains in the news for its endless traffic jams. There is a lot of criticism about the condition of the city’s roads.

A huge sinkhole mysteriously appeared in the middle of a busy road in Bengaluru. Measuring a depth of about 8 feet, the hole reduced traffic to a crawl throughout the day. A portion of JC Road near Rabindra Kalakshetra collapsed in the early hours of Thursday, creating a sinkhole a few feet wide, leading to accidents. The sudden appearance of the sinkhole affected traffic in the area, prompting the authorities to act quickly. The Times of India reported that the road tore down an autorickshaw, but passersby managed to eject the driver and the vehicle.

Thankfully, there was no untoward incident due to the road collapse. The Brihat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) officials hurriedly cordoned off the area and diverted road traffic. A major part of the road was blocked resulting in piles in the Central Business District.

Joint commissioner (south) Jagdish Naik told The Times of India that the cause of the incident is being probed. Naik was quoted as saying, “Our preliminary finding is that there could be an old well at the place where the road collapsed. The immediate trigger could be a BWSSB pipeline bursting.”

He said that there could be heavy seepage from the pipeline which may have submerged the turf on the spot. The agency was immediately informed to stop the leak. Chief Engineer of Roads and Infrastructure BS Prahlad claimed that the roads have been built over lakes and wells which create the possibility of sinkhole formation.

Known as the Garden City, Bangalore remains in the news for its endless traffic jams. There is a lot of criticism about the condition of the city’s roads. Tunneling work resulted in the formation of a large sinkhole on Tannery Road in September. Luckily there was no accident or damage in that incident.
